Curative-dose chemoradiotherapy vs total laryngectomy for stage T3-T4 squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx: An “apples-to-apples” analysis of the National Cancer Database
American Journal of Clinical Oncology Jun 04, 2019
Bates JE, et al. - Given that chemoradiotherapy (cRT) and total laryngectomy (TL) represent acceptable therapies for locally advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSSC), researchers compared the outcomes in patients taking full-dose treatment. From the National Cancer Database, they selected patients who had received either TL (with 60 to 80 Gy of adjuvant RT) or cRT (70 to 80 Gy) for T3-4N0-3 LSCC between 2004 to 2015. They used Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards modeling to assess variations in overall survival. In T3 but not T4a disease, similar outcomes were achieved with TL vs cRT in patients who received optimal therapy.
