Cumulative burden of inflammation predicts colorectal neoplasia risk in ulcerative colitis: A large single-centre study
Gut Feb 13, 2019
Choi CHR, et al. - In this retrospective single-center study, researchers tested the premise that the risk of colorectal neoplasia (CRN) in ulcerative colitis (UC) closely follows an actuarial accumulative inflammatory burden, which is inadequately represented by existing risk stratification strategies. Between 2003 and 2012, patients with extensive UC who were under colonoscopic surveillance were studied. For a median of 13 years, a total of 987 patients were followed, 97 of whom developed CRN. According to findings, CRN risk in UC is significantly linked to the accumulative inflammatory burden. In order to take this into account, an accurate stratification of the risk of CRN should involve an assessment of multiple surveillance episodes.
