Cuffed vs uncuffed tracheal tubes in children: A randomised controlled trial comparing leak, tidal volume and complications
Anaesthesia Nov 30, 2017
Chambers NA, et al. - In a pediatric patient population requiring standardised mechanical ventilation of lungs in the operating theatre, researchers compared tidal volume and leakage around cuffed and uncuffed tracheal tubes. According to findings, during general anaesthesia for routine elective surgery, cuffed tracheal tubes vs uncuffed tracheal tubes afforded better ventilation characteristics with standardised ventilator settings. Though long-term follow-up revealed no major complications in either group, more short-term complications were reported with uncuffed tracheal tubes.
