CT scan findings can predict the safety of delayed appendectomy for acute appendicitis

Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery Sep 21, 2018

Jeon BG, et al. - In this retrospective review of 5,956 patients who underwent appendectomy at a single institution from January 2008 to December 2016, researchers investigated the influence of in-hospital waiting time on perforation rates and clinical outcomes. Findings showed that a > 12-hour in-hospital waiting time to surgery for appendicitis conferred very little risk to the patient. Surgeons were cautioned to carefully weigh the “safety” of a delay to surgery for appendicitis, however, in patients whose initial CT scans were suggestive of perforated appendicitis.
