CT in differentiating complicated from uncomplicated appendicitis: Presence of any of 10 CT features vs radiologists' gestalt assessment
American Journal of Roentgenology Nov 03, 2019
Kim HY, Park JH, Lee SS, et al. - In this retrospective study carried out in a tertiary teaching hospital, 100 individuals with suspected appendicitis on CT were involved in order to propose a sensitive CT criterion (the presence of any of 10 CT characteristics) for complicated appendicitis that could be utilized in the nonoperative management of appendicitis and to contrast the diagnostic performance of this sensitive CT criterion with gestalt assessment. The pooled sensitivity of the presence of any of 10 CT features was greater compared with gestalt assessment, however, the pooled specificity was lower. Moreover, for prudent choice of individuals who should receive nonoperative treatment of appendicitis, the any-of-10-features criterion could be used in order to reduce treatment failure related to a false-negative diagnosis of complication.
