CT findings in pulmonary alveolar proteinosis: Serial changes and prognostic implications
Journal of Thoracic Disease Oct 31, 2018
Da Nam B, et al. - In this study involving 25 patients (men: n=16, women: n=9) with a diagnosis of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) at a single tertiary hospital, researchers assessed changes in lung abnormalities on serial computed tomography (CT) scans performed on the lungs of these patients, and determined factors that could be used to predict clinical improvement in PAP. On baseline and follow-up CT scans (median: 38 months; range: 2-96 months), the investigators evaluated the extent and distribution of PAP. Findings revealed that residual disease was detected in most patients with PAP; however, it rarely progressed to pulmonary fibrosis. The extent of clinical improvement could be predicted by the analyses of overall changes, with respect to lung abnormalities on serial CT scans.
