Crystalloid vs colloid for intraoperative goal-directed fluid therapy using a closed-loop system: A randomized, double-blinded, controlled trial in major abdominal surgery
Anesthesiology Dec 20, 2017
Joosten A, et al. - In this two-arm, parallel, randomized controlled, double-blind, bi-center superiority study, researchers tested the presumption that use of balanced colloids vs balanced crystalloids for intraoperative goal-directed fluid therapy, using a closed-loop system, is associated with fewer postoperative complications in patients undergoing major elective abdominal surgery. In findings, an association of colloid-based goal-directed fluid therapy vs a crystalloid one with fewer postoperative complications was highlighted. This beneficial effect may be related to a lower intraoperative fluid balance when a balanced colloid was used.
