Cross-sectional survey study to examine underuse of twice daily inhaled maintenance therapy among patients with asthma

Journal of Asthma Oct 19, 2019

Stanford RH, Bell C, Nag A, et al. - Since the intentional use of twice-daily (BID) inhaled controller therapy once daily (QD) by some patients with asthma, leading to failure of achieving optimal dosing levels, has been suggested by anecdotal evidence, researchers determined the prevalence of as well as factors related to intentional QD use of BID-indicated controllers among adult patients with asthma in this cross-sectional survey analysis. Participants were adults using inhaled controllers intended for BID dosing for treatment of asthma and/or COPD. They joined survey responses to administrative claims data for the previous 12 months (baseline). Overall patients were 1,401. Among these, intentional QD use of their controller and BID use was reported by 30.9% and 69.1%, respectively. A tendency to be healthier with better asthma control was seen in patients reporting intentional QD use vs patients reporting BID use. The main drivers of medication-taking behavior were perceptions about health and the necessity of controller use to control or treat asthma. The chance of reporting once daily use of their inhaled controller was more in patients with less severe asthma, but with maintained asthma control.
