Cross-sectional study of associations between normal body weight with central obesity and hyperuricemia in Japan

BMC Endocrine Disorders Jan 10, 2020

Shirasawa T, Ochiai H, Yoshimoto T, et al. - In order to determine the correlation between normal weight with central obesity (NWCO) and hyperuricemia, researchers conducted a cross sectional study between April 2013 and March 2014 including Japanese individuals aged 40–64 years who had experienced periodic health examinations. They obtained data from 96,863 adults. In comparison with NW, the adjusted OR for hyperuricemia was beneficially elevated in obesity without (OB) and with (OBCO), regardless of gender and were statistically beneficial in NWCO in comparison with NW. The outcomes were same regardless of alcohol consumption. An association between NWCO, OBCO and hyperuricemia was noted in middle-aged Japanese men and women. Screening should be necessary for middle-aged Japanese adults with normal weight by applying a combination of BMI and WHtR for the prevention of hyperuricemia.
