Cross-sectional association between physical activity level and subjective cognitive decline among US adults aged ≥45 years, 2015
Preventive Medicine Oct 09, 2020
Omura JD, Brown DR, McGuire LC, et al. - Among US adults aged ≥ 45 years, researchers conducted this study to investigate the prevalence of subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and resulting functional limitations by physical activity level. They analyzed data from 33 states and the District of Columbia taking part in the 2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (N = 128,925). The authors found that SCD prevalence increased as physical activity level decreased. The prevalence of functional limitations also increased in those with SCD as the level of physical activity decreased. Such variations largely remained after adjusting for respondent features. The results demonstrate the potential public health impact nationally of efforts to encourage physical activity for cognitive health. Compared to 1 in 6 inactive adults (15.7%), 1 in 11 active adults (8.8%) report SCD.
