Cross limb vessel transfer for salvage of the extremity with irreparable artery injury
Injury Nov 16, 2019
Yang J, Zheng C, Wang H, et al. - Researchers sought to describe their experience of employing a cross limb vessel transfer to salvage the limb in patients with complex vascular injuries of the extremity and wound infection. From April 2014 to January 2017, admission of 3 patients with an average age of 21 years (range, 16-29) was reported. The patients had the median length of hospital stay of 62 days (range, 26-122) and had undergone an average number of operation 7.3 times (range, 6-10). They reported the survival of two patients’ upper limb with limited movement and with relatively minor donor site morbidity and confirmed flow through the vessel reconstruction using CTA. However, due to severe infection and prolonged ischemia time, one patient had lower limb amputation. Based on these findings, they suggest cross limb vessel transfer as an invaluable technique to salvage the limb in patients with complex vascular injury and wound infection. However, limb salvage is not recommended for lower limb with prolonged ischemia time and severe infection.
