Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are associated with different lipid profile disorders: A nationwide population-based study
Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics Nov 12, 2019
Soh H, Im JP, Han K, et al. - Using claims data from the Korean National Healthcare Insurance service, researchers conducted a nationwide population-based study to explore the connection between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; a chronic inflammatory disorder of the intestine), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) and serum lipid profiles. In total, 9,706,026 individuals undergoing medical check-ups in 2009 were registered and followed up until 2016. During follow-up, people who developed CD or UC were identified. IBD was detected in 7,058 people during a median follow-up of 7.3 years. Findings suggested an association of low serum TC, LDL-C and HDL-C levels with CD. Low serum triglyceride levels have been associated with UC. Serum lipid profiles could, therefore, be a possible predictive indicator for IBD development in people who do not take medication for dyslipidaemia treatment.
