Criteria to identify a potential deceased organ donor: A systematic review
Critical Care Medicine Jul 21, 2018
Squires JE, et al. - Researchers systematically reviewed 124 articles identified from Medline and Embase databases from January 2006 to September 2017, to study global published literature defining a potential deceased organ donor and identifying clinical triggers for deceased organ donation identification and referral. Criteria fell into four categories: Neurological, Medical Decision, Cardiorespiratory, and Administrative. Based on the findings, they concluded that use of the distinct and globally consistent clinical criteria sets reported would attenuate ambiguity related to the deceased organ donor identification and the subsequent referral process. This could potentially contribute to reduce the number of missed donors and to save lives globally via increased transplantation.
