COVID‐19 pandemic in assisted living communities: Results from seven states
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Sep 26, 2020
Temkin‐Greener H, Guo W, Mao Y, et al. - Via performing observational study using data on confirmed COVID‐19 cases and deaths in assisted living (AL) residents from seven states, through May 29, 2020, researchers attempted to delineate variations in COVID‐19 confirmed cases and deaths among AL residents. in addition, they investigated their correlations with key AL characteristics. Assessing data from state government websites, they evaluated sample consisting of 3,994 ALs (82.1%) with 2,542 cases (96.0%) and 675 deaths (86.9%). State case fatality ranging from 3.32% in North Carolina to 9.26% in Connecticut was recorded, however, it was 12.89% and 31.59%, respectively, for ALs in these states. Findings indicated more COVID‐19 cases in ALs with a higher proportion of minorities. In addition, this vulnerable population had many of the previously identified individual risk factors. An equally critical impact of COVID‐19 on ALs as well as on nursing homes was noted, hence worth equivalent recognition from policy makers.
