COVID‐19 outcomes in patients waitlisted for kidney transplantation and kidney transplant recipients
American Journal of Transplantation Oct 15, 2020
Craig‐Schapiro R, Salinas T, Lubetzky M, et al. - Researchers sought to describe the consequences of COVID‐19 on patients waitlisted for kidney transplantation. Fifty-six waitlisted patients and eighty kidney transplant recipients, who were diagnosed with COVID‐19 between March 13‐ May 20, 2020, were included in this study. In multivariate analysis, the following factors were noted to be independently associated with mortality: waitlist status, age, and male gender. Observations suggest a dramatic impact of COVID‐19 on waitlisted patients, reducing their opportunities for transplantation and posing significant mortality risk. Attaining insight into the impact of COVID‐19 on waitlist patients vs transplant recipients may aid centers in weighing the risks and benefits of transplantation in the setting of ongoing COVID‐19.
