COVID ‐19 in Parkinson disease patients living in Lombardy, Italy
Movement Disorders Jul 01, 2020
Fasano A, Cereda E, Barichella M, et al. - Researchers investigated the risk of COVID‐19 among patients with PD and sought differences in the risk factors, and the clinical manifestations between patients with PD vs the general population. They conducted a case‐controlled survey among 1,486 PD patients attending a single tertiary center in Lombardy, Italy and 1,207 family members (controls). COVID‐19 was diagnosed in 105 (7.1%) PD patients and 92 controls (7.6%). Shortness of breath and requirement for hospitalization were less frequently reported among patients. The large cohort of nonadvanced PD patients did not differ from the general population in terms of COVID‐19 risk and mortality, but seemed to experience milder symptoms. Per findings, vitamin D supplementation may have a possible protective role.
