COVID-19 vaccine response in pregnant and lactating women: A cohort study
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Apr 02, 2021
Gray KJ, Bordt EA, Atyeo C, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the immunogenicity and reactogenicity of COVID-19 mRNA vaccination in pregnant and lactating women, compared with non-pregnant controls and natural COVID-19 infection in pregnancy, via performing a prospective cohort study of 131 reproductive-age vaccine recipients (84 pregnant, 31 lactating, and 16 non-pregnant). Pregnant and lactating women showed development of robust humoral immunity after receiving COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, with immunogenicity and reactogenicity similar to that observed in non-pregnant women. Findings revealed significantly greater vaccine-induced immune responses when compared with the response to natural infection. They identified immune transfer to neonates via placenta and breastmilk.
