COVID-19-related food insecurity among households with dietary restrictions: A national survey
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Jun 27, 2021
Guillaume JD, Jagai JS, Makelarski JA, et al. - Because food insecurity increased dramatically as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but little is known about pandemic-related food insecurity in households with dietary restrictions, researchers sought to investigate pre-pandemic rates of and pandemic-related change in food insecurity in households with and without dietary restrictions. A cross-sectional, panel-based survey of 3,200 US women performed in April 2020. Using the adapted Hunger Vital Sign, pre-pandemic food insecurity and early pandemic-related change in food insecurity were evaluated. Households with dietary restrictions were more likely than non-restricted households to experience pre-pandemic and pandemic-related incidents or worsening food insecurity. Food insecurity must be addressed in clinical care for patients with dietary restrictions.
