COVID-19 pandemic and stay-at-home mandates promote weight gain in US adults

Seal A, Schaffner A, Phelan S, et al. - Over 3 months during COVID-19, gain in weight was reported in US adults. Atypical weight gain and greater weight gain were recorded in individuals with obesity during this span in correlation with stay-at-home mandates.
0.6 kg gain was recorded in participants (76.7 kg to 77.3 kg).
Among those with obesity and normal weight, 26% vs 14.8%, respectively, had gained > 2 kg.
Following factors linked with greater weight gain: longer stay-at-home mandates, lower baseline minutes of physical activity per day, greater declines in minutes of physical activity per day, depressive symptoms, and greater increases in time preparing food.
