Cost-effectiveness studies of HPV self-sampling: A systematic review
Preventive Medicine Jan 10, 2020
Malone C, et al. - Researchers analyzed 16 eligible studies identified from online databases, to summarize the methods and outcomes of published human papillomavirus self-sampling (HPV-SS) cost and cost-effectiveness investigations, define implications of these outcomes for HPV-SS program implementation, and recognize knowledge gaps, given successful implementation of HPV-SS programs will rely on understanding potential expenses and health effects. The possible cost-effectiveness of HPV-SS was reported in 14 studies. The level of increase in cervical cancer screening attendance was the most commonly recognized driver of HPV-SS cost-effectiveness. Increased cost-effectiveness was reported in relation to lower HPV-SS material and testing expenses, higher sensitivity to identify cervical precancer, and longer duration of underscreening among HPV-SS users. There still exist knowledge gaps concerning the cost-effectiveness of HPV-SS in low- and middle-income settings.
