Cost-effectiveness analysis of laparoscopic vs open surgery in colon cancer
Surgical Endoscopy Jun 08, 2018
Mar J, et al. - Researchers performed a comparison of the cost-effectiveness of laparoscopic and open surgery for the treatment of colon cancer. They performed a cost-effectiveness analysis via comparing two groups of patients treated according to standard clinical practice (REDISSEC-CARESS/CCR cohort) by laparoscopic or open surgery and identified that laparoscopy to be dominant, resulting in more quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and lower costs. Laparoscopy was noted to require fewer resources in all subgroups, however, outcomes may be negatively affected in elderly patients, representing an opportunity for shared decision making between surgeons and patients.
