Cortisol hypersecretion and the risk of Alzheimer disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Ageing Research Reviews Sep 25, 2020
Zheng B, Tal R, Middleton L, et al. - A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to present cortisol hypersecretion and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers carried out to search PubMed, EMBASE, and PsycINFO for eligible studies. The random-effects meta-analyses was applied to pool cross-sectional data; the differences in morning cortisol levels between patients and cognitively normal controls were quantified. Due to methodological heterogeneity, longitudinal studies were qualitatively synthesized. This analysis enrolled 57 cross-sectional studies and 19 prospective cohort studies with 17,245 participants. It was shown that in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, morning cortisol was validated to be moderately elevated and may have diagnostic and prognostic values for AD.
