Cortisol and DHEA-S levels in pregnant women with severe anxiety
BMC Psychiatry Aug 11, 2020
Leff-Gelman P, Flores-Ramos M, Carrasco AEA, et al. - In women exhibiting severe anxiety, researchers investigated both cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulphate (DHEA-S) levels during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Via the self-reported version of the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), they evaluated pregnant women during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy and patients exhibiting a cutoff score > 15 considered with severe anxiety (n = 101) were put in one group, while control pregnant women (n = 44) with a cutoff score < 5 were placed in another. In all participants, they measured morning cortisol, DHEA-S and Cortisol/DHEA-S index. Pregnant women with high levels of anxiety exhibit higher cortisol/DHEA-S index vs healthy pregnant women. Even after adjusting by gestational weeks, results revealed a significant association between cortisol and HARS scores.
