Corticosteroid use and intensive care unit-acquired weakness: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Critical Care Aug 08, 2018
Yang T, et al. - In critically ill adult patients, experts assessed the correlation between corticosteroid use and intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired weakness. They searched the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature databases from database inception until October 10, 2017 for studies assessing the link between corticosteroids and ICU-acquired weakness in adult ICU patients. Results demonstrated that corticosteroid use had a significant correlation with ICU-acquired weakness. Therefore, in order to reduce the risk of ICU-acquired weakness, a limited exposure to corticosteroids or a short administration time in clinical practice was suggested.
