Corticosteroid-associated lupus pancreatitis: A case series and systematic review of the literature
Lupus May 02, 2019
Dwivedi P, et al. - Researchers sought to report a case series of ‘corticosteroid-associated lupus pancreatitis’ defined as the occurrence of acute pancreatitis in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) within days to weeks of starting medium-to-high dose corticosteroids. In addition, they performed a systematic review of previously published reports. They identified 420 admissions of SLE patients. Among these, corticosteroid-associated lupus pancreatitis developed in six patients (1.4%); all were female, with mean age and disease duration of 19.7 ± 3.3 and 3.8 ± 2.5 years respectively. Findings suggest that pancreatitis develops in a small but substantial proportion of patients with lupus. Corticosteroids are continued in many of these patients, and some of these received more aggressive immunosuppression. However, significant mortality remained among these patients, and further studies are recommended to recognize appropriate treatment.
