Cortical pain response of newborn infants to venepuncture: A randomized controlled trial comparing analgesic effects of sucrose vs breastfeeding
Clinical Journal of Pain Jun 20, 2018
Rioualen S, et al. - In a randomized, prospective, controlled trial including 114 healthy, 3-day-old term neonates, undergoing venepuncture for neonatal screening, the efficacy of sucrose administration vs breastfeeding to decrease cortical responses to pain during venepuncture was compared. Newborn infants who were administered sucrose showed no difference in the cortical responses to pain during venepuncture when compared to those who were breastfed. Relative to sucrose-administered neonates, breastfed neonates presented more behavioral expressions that indicated pain.
