Cortical pain response of newborn infants to venepuncture: A randomized controlled trial comparing analgesic effects of sucrose vs breastfeeding
The Clinical Journal of Pain Jun 11, 2018
Rioualen S, et al. - The efficacy of sucrose administration vs breastfeeding to decrease cortical responses to pain during venepuncture were compared in this randomized, prospective, controlled trial. Researchers randomly assigned healthy, 3-day-old term neonates, undergoing venepuncture for neonatal screening to receive sucrose solution or be breastfed before venepuncture. They used the Neonatal Facial Coding System (NFCS) to assess reactions. No difference in the cortical responses to pain during venepuncture in newborn infants who were administered sucrose vs those who were breastfed was found.
