Correlations between physician and hospital stroke thrombectomy volumes and outcomes: A nationwide analysis
Stroke Jun 10, 2021
Stein LK, Mocco J, Fifi J, et al. - Due to the uncertainty surrounding the relationship between stroke thrombectomy (ST) case volumes and outcomes, despite the Joint Commission’s certification requirement of ≥ 15 ST cases per center and proceduralist annually, researchers sought to determine whether a proceduralist or hospital volume threshold exists that is linked to better outcomes among Medicare beneficiaries. From January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2017, they used de-identified, national 100% inpatient Medicare data sets for US people aged ≥ 65 years. Thirteen thousand three hundred thirty-five patients were treated with ST in 641 hospitals by 2,754 proceduralists. Nationally, higher proceduralist and hospital ST case volumes were linked to decreased inpatient mortality and better outcome. Such findings support volume requirements in ST training and certification guidelines.
