Correlations between computational fluid dynamics and clinical evaluation of nasal airway obstruction due to septal deviation: An observational study
Clinical Otolaryngology May 23, 2019
Radulesco T, et al. - In this observational study, researchers identified how computational fluid dynamics (CFD) could be correlated with clinical assessment of nasal airway obstruction (NAO) in patients with symptomatic septal deviation (SD) populations, as well as ascertained if CFD could define which side was the more obstructed. All patients with non-structural NAO causes such as rhinitis, sinusitis or tumor/autoimmune processes (ie, not anatomical obstruction) have been excluded. Twenty-two patients were analyzed complaining of NAO with SD, and 44 analyzes were conducted comparing each side with their CFD data. This investigation aimed at enhancing the ability in the nasal airway to interpret CFD-calculated data. It emphasizes and confirms that heat flux measurements in SD cases are very closely correlated with patient perception. It also helps differentiate the more obstructed side from the less obstructed side and may contribute to further studies of CFD.
