Correlation of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis with bone mineral density in adults aged 20–59 years
Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research Mar 19, 2021
Zhu Z, Hu G, Jin F, et al. - Researchers utilized data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to determine the link between bone mineral density (BMD) as a marker of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a population-based sample comprising adults 20−59 years of age. There were 11,094 adult participants in total. Findings revealed an association of lumbar BMD with OA but no link was found with RA. In men, but not in women, a link was identified between a higher lumbar BMD and OA. These data may enhance the understanding between OA, RA, and bone health. No link was seen between lumbar BMD and RA in either males and females. Duration of arthritis was not linked with lumbar BMD for either OA and RA.
