Correlation of molecular and morphologic features of appendiceal epithelial neoplasms
Histopathology May 25, 2019
Tsai JH, et al. - In this investigation, researchers identified the genetic characteristics of appendiceal epithelial neoplasm and correlated genetic and morphological characteristics. By utilizing targeted next-generation sequencing of 11 genes commonly mutated in gastrointestinal neoplasms, the genetic features of a series of 47 appendiceal epithelial neoplasms of various morphologies were analyzed. It was noted that most cases of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms showed mutations of GNAS and KRAS. Findings revealed that adenomatous polyps often had mutations in APC, KRAS, and TP53 and were morphologically and molecularly similar to colorectal adenomatous polyps. A close connection was found between morphology and genetic events in appendiceal neoplasms and suggest a phylogenetic link between different entities.
