Correlation between sodium, potassium, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and glucose values as measured by a laboratory autoanalyzer and a blood gas analyzer
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Aug 23, 2018
Altunok I, et al. - In this retrospective, single-centered study, researchers compared the reliability of the results from blood gas analyzers to the results of core laboratory autoanalyzers. The electronic records of patients admitted to the Emergency Department of a tertiary care teaching hospital between May 2014 and December 2017 were examined. They analyzed laboratory results from a total of 31,060 patients. This work revealed that for sodium and potassium levels, the two types of measurements had a moderate correlation and for glucose, hemoglobin, and hematocrit levels, the measurements had a strong correlation, however, none of the levels had acceptable agreement limits. They recommend clinicians to be aware of the limitations of blood gas analyzer results.
