Correlation between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and clinical manifestations and complications of retinitis pigmentosa
Acta Ophthalmologica Jun 08, 2021
He M, Wu T, Zhang L, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective study to assess the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) complicated with cataract and explore the associations between the NLR and specific clinical features of RP. The sample consisted of 79 RP patients complicated with cataract (125 eyes) and 63 age- and sex-matched patients (63 eyes) with age-related cataract (ARC). NLRs are not only higher in RP patients with cataract, but they are also associated with several clinical manifestations of RP. Before cataract surgery, the NLR can be a predictive biomarker of higher degrees of PSC (> P1) and zonular weakness in RP. Such findings imply that systemic inflammation may be involved in the pathogenesis of RP.
