Correlation between kidney transplantation and colorectal cancer in hemodialysis patients: A nationwide, retrospective, population-based cohort study
BMC Cancer Nov 21, 2019
Wang HE, Liao YC, Hu JM, et al. - Researchers analyzed a large-scale population-based Chinese cohort, to determine the correlation between kidney transplantation (KT) and colorectal cancer (CRC) in this nationwide, retrospective study. From Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database (2000–2008), they selected 3,739 regular hemodialysis patients receiving KT (exposed cohort) and 42,324 hemodialysis patients not receiving KT (non-exposed cohort). From January 1, 2000, to the date of CRC diagnosis, death, or the end of 2013, they observed both cohorts. A significantly higher risk of CRC was observed in hemodialysis patients undergoing KT vs those not undergoing KT. Based on these findings, experts recommended that cancer should continue to be a primary focus of prevention during KT.
