Correlation between duration of preoperative fasting and emergence delirium in pediatric patients undergoing ophthalmic examination under anesthesia: A prospective observational study

Paediatric Anaesthesia May 19, 2018

Khanna P, et al. - In this prospective observational study, researchers investigated the correlation between the duration of preoperative fasting and emergence delirium in children (of age group 2-6 years, with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I or II) undergoing ophthalmic examination under anesthesia with sevoflurane. Using the Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium (PAED) scale at 5 minute interval till 30 minutes from the time of leaving the operation theater, the presence of emergence delirium was assessed. A significant correlation of PAED scores at 15 and 25 minutes with duration of fasting was found. Overall, results suggested that increased preoperative fasting duration may be a risk factor for postoperative emergence delirium in children undergoing ophthalmic examination under general anesthesia.
