Correlation between body mass index and obstructive sleep apnea severity indexes: A retrospective study
American Journal of Otolaryngology Apr 10, 2018
Ciavarella D, et al. - Researchers assessed whether Body Mass Index (BMI) was associated with Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), mean arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) and Nadir SaO2, which were all indexes defining the severity of the respiratory stress associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). An association of higher BMI values with lower Nadir SaO2 during overnight polysomnography was noted. Findings suggested that since for cardiovascular diseases, hypoxia stress was a risk factor and it altered the lipid metabolism, dietary consulting ought to be recommended along with other treatment modalities for OSA.
