Correlates of health-related quality of life in youth with psychogenic non- epileptic seizures

Flewelling KD, Koehler A, Shaffer J, et al. - In youth with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES), researchers sought to determine the factors linked with health-related quality of life (HRQoL). In the the current study, 37 youth and one of their parents who attended a clinic visit for treatment of PNES were asked to complete measures of psychological functioning, and patient charts were used to extract medical data. Parent-reported anxiety and depression were related to parent-report of HRQoL; self-report of depression was related to self-reported HRQoL. HRQoL was not linked with seizure frequency, somatic complaints, and social problems in this sample. Study results suggest an association of internalizing symptoms, but not seizure frequency, with poorer overall functioning in youth with PNES. Based on outcomes, they emphasize implementing interventions focused on improvement in anxiety and depression, as well as seizure cessation, as these may help improve HRQoL in youth with PNES more so than those focused on seizure cessation alone.
