Correlates of daily functioning in older adults with autism spectrum disorder
Aging and Mental Health Aug 03, 2019
Wise EA, et al. - Researchers assessed factors associated with daily functioning in a sample of 74 adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who need a high level of support. Residential staff was administered questionnaires and participants’ independence level in basic and instrumental activities of daily living was identified. Generally, there was no decline in daily functioning in adults with autism as they age, but this may require more study. A better general medical health rating was noted to be correlated with higher daily functioning. Participants with IQ range of 55 to 65 displayed greater functional independence than those with IQ below 55. They recommend focusing on overall medical health and encouraging daily living skill building when designing community programs for adults with ASD who need a high level of support.
