Coronary plaque volume and predictors for fast plaque progression assessed by serial coronary CT angiography—A single-center observational study
European Journal of Radiology Jan 24, 2020
Weber C, Deseive S, Brim G, et al. - Experts sought to distinguish individuals with fast progression of coronary plaque volume PV and define changes in PV and plaque components over time. They evaluated total PV (TPV)in 350 individuals undergoing serial coronary computed tomography angiography (median scan interval 3.6 years) using semi-automated software. They analyzed plaque morphology based on attenuation values and stratified into calcified, fibrous, fibrous-fatty and low-attenuation PV for volumetric measurements. They categorized every plaque as either calcified, partially calcified or non-calcified. They detected 812 and 955 plaques in the first and second scan. They found fast plaque progression in male individuals and individuals with typical angina. They noted that high HDL cholesterol revealed a protective impact.
