Coronary artery bypass grafting among older adults: Patterns, outcomes, and trends
Journal of Surgical Research Oct 17, 2020
Olufajo OA, Wilson A, Zeineddin A, et al. - Researchers sought to describe the characteristics and outcomes of older adults undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and to determine temporal trends. Using data from the National Inpatient Sample (2005-2014), they identified 60,124 patients (mean age: 86.8 y) who underwent CABG for inclusion. Majority were men (61%), white (88%), and underwent treatment in teaching hospitals (61%). Analyses revealed reducing CABG volumes among older adults, as well as elevating comorbidity burden but these people showed improving outcomes. Data are thereby suggestive of enhanced preoperative optimization and better perioperative care processes.
