Cordocentesis-associated fetal loss and risk factors: Experience of 6,650 cases from a single center
Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology Jan 30, 2020
Tanvisut R, Wanapirak C, Piyamongkol W, et al. - Researchers sought for the risk factors of fetal loss linked with cordocentesis. They conducted a retrospective cohort study on pregnancies undergoing cordocentesis at mid-pregnancy from a single center (a tertiary hospital, teaching school). They identified 10,343 procedures performed during the study period; of these, 6,650 procedures meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Marked reduction in the fetal loss in early learning curve of practice was observed in correlation with cordocentesis model training, which is the only modifiable factor. Hence, practice without prior model training is no longer acceptable. The Independent risk factors of fetal loss were penetration of the placenta, prolonged bleeding, and fetal bradycardia. Relative to previous reports, this study reported much lower cordocentesis-related fetal loss, may be only 0.6%.
