Convergent and discriminant validity of the Emotional Eating Scale Adapted for Children and Adolescents (EES-C) Short-Form
Eating Behaviours Nov 05, 2020
Limbers CA, et al. - Researchers sought to evaluate the convergent and discriminant validity of the 10-item Emotional Eating Scale Adapted for Children and Adolescents (EES-C) Short-Form in assessing emotional eating in a community sample of adolescents. In addition, this measure was examined for reliability and structural validity. One hundred twenty-eight adolescents aged 13 to 19 years participated in this study (mean age = 15.10 years; SD = 2.09; 53.9% female). Significantly greater levels of emotional eating were reported among adolescents who endorsed loss of control eating vs adolescents who did not endorse loss of control eating thereby supporting the convergent validity of the EES-C Short-Form. In addition, there was significant correlation of the EES-C Short-Form with a subjective measure of loss of control eating , further establishing convergent validity. Discriminant validity of the EES-C Short-Form was supported by its small, non-significant correlation with the Gratitude Questionnaire-Six-Item Form. The EES-C Short-Form showed acceptable reliability and a unidimensional factor structure. Overall data gained contribute to the existing research that supports the reliability and validity of EES-C Short-Form for assessing emotional eating in children and adolescents.
