Conventional and biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs for osteoarthritis: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Rheumatology Jun 21, 2018

Persson MSM, et al. - Experts conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to compare DMARDs with placebo in participants with symptomatic OA. In OA, clinically significant pain relief was not offered with DMARDs above placebo. Based on this poor efficacy authors noted that for OA pain inflammation may not be a prime driver. Findings did not suggest any difference between erosive vs non-erosive hand OA, hand vs knee OA or anti-IL1 vs anti-TNF biologics.
