Controlled trial of two incremental milk-feeding rates in preterm infants
New England Journal of Medicine Oct 16, 2019
Dorling J, Abbott J, Berrington J, et al. - Very preterm or very-low-birth-weight infants (n = 2,804) were randomized to daily milk increments of 30 ml per kilogram of body weight (faster increment) or 18 ml per kilogram (slower increment) until reaching full feeding volumes in order to determine whether slow progress of enteral feeding volumes in preterm infants was related to a decreased risk of necrotizing enterocolitis although with an enhanced risk of late-onset sepsis. In very preterm or very-low-birth-weight infants, no important variation in survival without moderate or critical neurodevelopmental disability at 24 months with an approach of promoting milk feeding volumes in daily increments of 30 ml per kilogram in comparison with 18 ml per kilogram, was noted.
