Control of cardiovascular risk factors among US adults with type 2 diabetes with and without cardiovascular disease
The American Journal of Cardiology Jun 04, 2019
Andary R, et al. – Using participant data (n=1,179) from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2016, researchers focused on control of cardiovascular risk factors among adults with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) with and without cardiovascular disease (CVD) in this study. They found that those at target control of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c; 55.8%), blood pressure (BP; 51.3%), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C; 49.3%) constituted about half of the overall T2DM adults sample, with more being non-smokers (84.3%). The factor that was least frequently at target control was body mass index (BMI; 9.1% for BMI < 25kg/m2) compared with other risk factors. In subjects with vs without prior CVD, a lower proportion of patients were at composite control. For HbA1c, BP, LDL-C, and nonsmoking status, those at composite CVD risk factor control constituted less than one-fifth of adults with T2DM.
