Contributors to postinjury mental health in urban black men with serious injuries
JAMA Sep 27, 2019
Richmond TS, et al. - Via a cohort study that included 623 urban black men with serious injuries who had been treated at an urban, level 1 trauma center in the Northeastern United States, experts ascertained risk and protective factors across the life span that add to depression and posttraumatic stress symptom severity at 3 months following hospital discharge. Even in the middle of acute medical care for traumatic injury, the intersection of former trauma and adversity, previous exposure to neighborhood disadvantage, and poorer preinjury health and functioning were significant. The relevance of trauma-informed healthcare and focused evaluation was validated to recognized patients with injuries who were at the greatest risk for poor postinjury mental health outcomes.
