Contributors to frailty in critical illness: Multi-dimensional analysis of the Clinical Frailty Scale
Journal of Critical Care May 08, 2019
Darvall JN, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers investigated which health domains in the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) vs the Edmonton Frail Scale (EFS, a multi-dimensional validated tool), were influenced by frailty in ICU. This study included 160 patients overall (aged ≥50 years), of whom 33.8% were frail. Greater in-hospital and 6-month mortality was observed in frail patients. CFS and EFS scales were highly correlated, with high agreement. Across the spectrum of frailty domains, worse health status was demonstrated by frail patients; this was particularly reported for functional dependence, malnutrition, and prior hospital admissions. Findings highlighted the influence of frailty on a range of health deficits, adequately measured via the CFS, in the critically ill.
