Contrast-enhanced 18F-FDG-PET/CT for differentiating tumor and radionecrosis in head and neck cancer: Our experience in 37 patients
Clinical Otolaryngology Jul 13, 2018
Meerwein CM, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective study on 37 head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) patients to assess the performance of different (18F) fluoro-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) / computed tomography (CT) parameters for distinguishing radionecrosis and tumor persistence/recurrence. Tumor recurrence/persistence could be identified and radionecrosis could be ruled out with the presence of a permeative growth pattern in HNSCC patients after RT (accuracy: 100%). Radionecrosis was independently predicted with similar high accuracy (accuracy: 99%) by the combination of a low SUVmax, location of the hottest voxel inside bone/cartilage and the presence of a pathological fracture.
