Continuous positive airway pressure improves blood pressure and serum cardiovascular biomarkers in obstructive sleep apnoea and hypertension
European Respiratory Journal Apr 07, 2021
Lui MMS, Tse HF, Lam DCL, et al. - Among patients suffering from moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and with hypertension requiring at least three anti-hypertensive medications, this inquiry was performed to assess how ambulatory blood pressure (BP) and subclinical myocardial injury in these patients could be impacted by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Randomization (1:1) of eligible patients was done to receive either CPAP treatment or control (no CPAP) for eight weeks. In this study, overall 92 patients were randomised. According to findings, not only improvement in ambulatory BP but also alleviation in subclinical myocardial injury and strain was conferred by short-term CPAP treatment in patients having OSA and multiple cardiovascular risk factors including difficult-to-control hypertension.
