Bajaj JS, et al. - The physicians designed this study to investigate whether continued alcohol misuse in human cirrhosis was associated with an impaired gut-liver axis. Continued alcohol misuse, despite cirrhosis, predisposed patients to widespread dysbiosis with alterations in microbial functionality like a toxic bile acid profile, which could lead to intestinal and systemic inflammation.
